Ukraine Faces US Deadline on Peace Plan Amidst Intense Pressure

Kyiv is reportedly under immense pressure to accept a US-brokered peace plan with Russia, as President Zelenskyy insists he will not betray Ukraine’s interests. The US has given Ukraine until Thursday to agree to the proposal.

President Zelenskyy addressed the nation, acknowledging the difficult situation. He stated that Ukraine faces a choice between accepting a challenging set of terms or enduring a harsh winter, seemingly alluding to the conditions within the US peace plan.

The proposed plan reportedly includes concessions of territory, a reduction in the size of the Ukrainian army, and a commitment to non-alignment with NATO – key demands previously voiced by Moscow. Zelenskyy emphasized his commitment to defending Ukraine’s sovereignty and the rights of its citizens.

While not explicitly detailing the plan, Zelenskyy affirmed that Ukraine would engage constructively with the United States and other partners. He vowed to prevent Russia from accusing Ukraine of obstructing the peace process and pledged to present alternative proposals to the US plan.

Following Zelenskyy’s address, US President Donald Trump stated in a radio interview that he believes Thursday is a suitable deadline for Ukraine to accept the peace proposal. Reports suggest Washington is exerting significant pressure on Kyiv, potentially including threats to withhold intelligence and weapons, to secure agreement on a framework for a peace deal.

Russia has confirmed receipt of the American peace plan. The Kremlin has yet to comment on the specifics of the proposal, but earlier statements indicate that the key points in the plan align with Moscow’s long-standing goals.

This situation marks a critical juncture in the ongoing conflict, with Ukraine caught between the demands of its allies and the imperative to protect its national interests.
