Johannesburg, South Africa – Prime Minister Sifi Grib, representing President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, participated in a crucial preparatory meeting in Johannesburg on Friday, ahead of the G20 Summit. The consultative session was hosted by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The meeting brought together heads of state and government from African nations participating in the G20, alongside key officials from regional organizations. Discussions centered on anticipated outcomes from the G20 Summit, with a particular focus on priorities identified by South Africa, the current G20 chair. These priorities are of significant importance to African countries and have been placed at the heart of the summit’s agenda, marking the first time the G20 has convened on African soil.
Participants explored avenues for strengthening collaborative African efforts. This includes building upon initiatives spearheaded by South Africa during its G20 presidency and leveraging the African Union’s membership within the group to amplify the continent’s voice and defend its interests. Key areas of concern include addressing debt burdens, securing development financing, and ensuring equitable exploitation and valorization of natural resources.
Furthermore, the meeting addressed the urgent need to reform global governance structures, encompassing both international financial institutions and the United Nations system. Africa continues to face under-representation and marginalization in critical international decision-making processes that directly impact the continent’s future. Prime Minister Grib’s presence underscores Algeria’s commitment to advocating for African interests on the global stage.
Prime Minister Grib arrived in Johannesburg on Thursday, representing President Tebboune at the G20 Summit. The summit aims to tackle pressing global challenges and promote sustainable and inclusive growth.
