A prominent Palestinian writer has affirmed Algeria’s unwavering commitment to the Palestinian cause, emphasizing that it transcends political considerations and is deeply rooted in the nation’s moral, historical, and cultural fabric. The writer, Sami Ibrahim Fouda, highlighted that Algeria remains a beacon of principled diplomacy, refusing to compromise on its values when it comes to Palestine.
In an article titled ‘Algeria and Palestine: An Unbreakable History and Unyielding Will,’ Fouda underscored the historical ties between the Algerian and Palestinian people. He noted that Algeria, having itself emerged from a hard-fought anti-colonial struggle, has never forgotten the plight of Palestine and its resilient people.
Fouda pointed out that Algeria’s independence in 1962 marked a turning point, with the nation opening its doors and hearts to Palestinian revolutionaries. Algiers quickly became a vital platform for the Palestinian voice on the international stage. The writer stressed that the declaration of the State of Palestine by the late Yasser Arafat in Algiers in 1988 was no coincidence, and Algeria was among the first nations to recognize the newly formed state.
A Strong Voice at the UN
According to Fouda, Algeria has consistently provided Palestine with a strong voice within the United Nations, steadfastly supporting Palestinian national rights and rejecting any form of political pressure or blackmail. He stressed that the Algerian position has remained unchanged since then.
Beyond Diplomacy: A Shared Spirit
Fouda emphasized that the relationship extends beyond diplomatic ties, with the Algerian people themselves, in their cities, villages, universities, and streets, carrying Palestine in their hearts. He cited solidarity marches, fundraising efforts, grassroots initiatives, and Algerian literature and art as evidence of the deep connection between the two nations. He dismissed recent criticisms of Algeria’s position as coming from marginal elements and not reflecting the true depth of Algerian support.
Algeria’s Enduring Stance
Fouda concluded by reiterating that Algeria’s current stance at the United Nations is a continuation of its long-standing principles, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to the Palestinian cause.
