Gaza City – In the aftermath of a recently declared ceasefire, the eastern areas of Gaza City have witnessed the demolition of numerous homes and residential blocks, according to a spokesperson for the Palestinian Civil Defense in the Gaza Strip.
Major Mahmoud Bassal stated that the demolitions occurred east of the ‘Yellow Line’, with the advancement of this line by 250 meters forcing hundreds of families to flee their homes. These families are now displaced to areas within Gaza City lacking basic necessities.
“The displaced citizens are facing dire humanitarian conditions, with overcrowding in areas that are severely lacking in essential services, rendering them uninhabitable,” Bassal explained.
The Palestinian official warned that the approaching winter season poses additional and significant risks to the population if immediate and substantial intervention is not provided. He emphasized that the current pace of relief efforts in the Gaza Strip is inadequate compared to the rapidly escalating needs on the ground.
The situation is critical, with concerns mounting over the ability to provide adequate shelter and resources to the displaced population before the onset of winter. The lack of basic services in the overcrowded areas is exacerbating the already challenging living conditions for Gazan residents.
It is important to note that since October 7, 2023, the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip has resulted in a staggering number of casualties, with Palestinian health authorities reporting 69,733 fatalities and 170,863 injuries. The majority of those affected are women and children.
