Algiers – In a landmark move signaling a commitment to technological advancement, Algeria has officially launched its 5G network. This strategic initiative, spearheaded by leading mobile operators Mobilis, Ooredoo, and Djezzy, marks a significant step towards realizing a robust and innovative digital economy.
The launch of 5G aligns with the government’s vision to foster a technologically driven nation, providing advanced digital services to citizens, public institutions, and private enterprises. This initiative is expected to revolutionize various sectors, boosting efficiency and driving economic growth.
According to a statement, the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications emphasized the pivotal role of developing postal services and expanding internet connectivity in the nation’s digital strategy. The introduction of 5G is poised to significantly enhance the quality of digital services available to Algerians.
The government has been actively working to modernize the digital infrastructure, including expanding the fiber optic network to improve internet speed and reliability. Furthermore, efforts are underway to enhance the availability of cash at post offices and ATMs, ensuring greater convenience for citizens.
Currently, approximately 6.8 million Algerian households benefit from internet services, with 2.9 million connected via fiber optics. The complete phasing out of copper networks is scheduled for completion before the end of 2027, further solidifying the nation’s commitment to a modern and efficient digital ecosystem.
Licenses to operate the 5G network were granted to Mobilis, Ooredoo Algeria, and Djezzy following a competitive bidding process overseen by the Postal and Electronic Communications Regulatory Authority. This development represents a major milestone in Algeria’s journey towards becoming a digitally empowered nation.
