Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated Sunday that Canada will resume trade discussions with the United States “when it is appropriate.” Speaking on the sidelines of the G20 leaders’ summit in Johannesburg, Carney indicated he doesn’t have an urgent matter to discuss with President Donald Trump at this time.
“We are very focused on the future of Canada and new partnerships,” Carney told reporters. “There will be conversations with the President, perhaps in the next couple of weeks… and we will resume discussions when it is appropriate,” he added, reiterating his openness to dialogue.
“I don’t have a pressing issue to discuss with the President right now,” Carney clarified. “When America wants to come back and have discussions on the trade side, we will have those discussions.”
The US President reportedly suspended talks with Canada last month following an anti-tariff advertisement issued by the government of Ontario. Canada is seeking an agreement that would reduce tariffs imposed by the US on steel, aluminum, and automobile imports. The timing of the resumption of talks remains uncertain, with Carney emphasizing the need for the conditions to be right for productive negotiations.
