UN Reports Escalating Violence in South Sudan’s Upper Nile State

The United Nations peacekeeping mission in South Sudan has reported a surge in tribal violence and aerial bombardments in Upper Nile State, raising serious concerns about the safety and security of civilians in the region.

According to a statement released by Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, the recent incidents in Uleng and Baliet counties of Upper Nile State have resulted in numerous casualties and the displacement of approximately 12,000 people. The violence has disproportionately affected women and children, exacerbating the already dire humanitarian situation.

“The United Nations is deeply concerned about the escalating violence in Upper Nile State,” Dujarric stated. He further elaborated that the UN mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has deployed a patrol to Baliet this week in response to the crisis. The peacekeeping forces have engaged with local officials and are providing emergency medical assistance to those affected by the fighting.

The upsurge in violence threatens to undermine the fragile peace process in South Sudan and further destabilize the region. The UN’s presence aims to provide a measure of security and facilitate humanitarian aid, but the long-term solution requires a commitment from all parties to resolve their differences peacefully and work towards a lasting political settlement.
