Algiers – Algeria has made “considerable progress” in implementing its national strategy for the development of hydrogen, Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, announced Monday in Riyadh. The ministry said in a statement that Algeria considers hydrogen a key pillar in its energy transition.
According to the statement, the Algerian government is committed to leveraging its abundant solar resources and existing natural gas infrastructure to become a major player in the global hydrogen market. The strategy encompasses the entire value chain, from production and storage to transportation and export.
“We are determined to position Algeria as a reliable and competitive supplier of green and blue hydrogen to Europe and beyond,” Minister Arkab stated. He emphasized the importance of international partnerships and technology transfer in achieving Algeria’s hydrogen ambitions. He also highlighted the country’s strategic location and well-established energy infrastructure as key advantages.
The government is actively working on creating a favorable regulatory framework to attract foreign investment and encourage the development of hydrogen projects. Several pilot projects are already underway, focusing on different hydrogen production technologies and applications.
The development of a robust hydrogen economy is seen as crucial for Algeria’s long-term energy security and economic diversification. It aligns with the country’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and contributing to global efforts to combat climate change. The Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Mines is actively collaborating with international organizations to ensure that Algeria’s hydrogen strategy is aligned with global best practices and standards.
