European Council President Antonio Costa held discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday, ahead of consultations amongst European leaders regarding US-led peace efforts in Ukraine.
Costa stated via social media that his talks with Zelenskyy aimed to gain his assessment of the current situation. He emphasized the critical importance of a unified and coordinated European stance in ensuring positive outcomes from peace negotiations, both for Ukraine and for Europe as a whole.
“A unified and coordinated European position is key to ensuring good results from peace negotiations – for Ukraine and Europe,” Costa stated.
Negotiators from the United States and Ukraine met in Geneva on Sunday, reportedly reaching a revised framework for peace aimed at ending the conflict in Ukraine. Details of this framework have not yet been publicly released.
President Zelenskyy also took to social media, stating, “It is important that Ukraine participates in the development of a common EU position on an equal footing. We appreciate the respect.” He added that he briefed Costa on the Geneva negotiations and key priorities for Ukraine.
Last week, the US administration reportedly presented Kyiv with a 28-point plan to end the conflict. Leaders from the 27 EU member states are scheduled to discuss ongoing peace efforts on the sidelines of a meeting between the European Union and the African Union in Luanda. The discussions aim to solidify a common European approach to the peace process, leveraging the EU’s diplomatic and economic influence to support a lasting resolution to the conflict.
