Algeria Assumes AU Peace and Security Council Presidency with Ambitious Agenda

Algeria’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union, Mohamed Khaled, has highlighted the significance of Algeria assuming the rotating presidency of the African Union Peace and Security Council for the month of August, describing it as both a major responsibility and a reflection of Algeria’s strong commitment to peace and stability across the continent.

Khaled stated that this role embodies Algeria’s long-standing foreign policy principles under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, particularly its dedication to supporting peace, security, and African-led solutions to African challenges.

He noted that this is Algeria’s second time holding the rotating presidency since its election in 2025 as a member of the council for the sixth time since its establishment in 2003. This, he said, reflects the trust Algeria enjoys within the African Union and underscores its consistent commitment to promoting stability and cooperation across Africa.

To mark this presidency, Algeria has prepared a comprehensive and balanced program of work focused on addressing the continent’s most pressing security challenges. The approach is described as pragmatic and results-oriented, aiming to deliver concrete initiatives and effective outcomes that strengthen the council’s capacity to respond to evolving threats.

The program is built around three main priorities. First, conducting a comprehensive assessment of the peace and security situation across Africa to better understand challenges and propose actionable solutions. Second, actively engaging with ongoing crises, including a planned field mission to Sudan to assess humanitarian and security conditions and support peaceful resolution efforts. Third, strengthening coordination between the Peace and Security Council and other African Union bodies to enhance collective action in areas such as governance, human rights, and conflict prevention.

Through this leadership role, Algeria aims to contribute meaningfully to the continent’s aspirations for peace, stability, and sustainable development.
