The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research is in the final stages of the process to increase teachers’ salaries and revise their specific status across all categories.

A total of 1,904 budgetary positions for hospital-university staff will be made available. According to Abdeljabbar Daoudi, advisor to the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, speaking on Radio Nationale, Channel 1, a new recruitment drive is planned. This operation will run concurrently with another aimed at research professors.

This recruitment will cover precisely 692 positions in various research institutions under the Ministry of Higher Education. It’s a direct recruitment process, Mr. Daoudi emphasizes, stating that these institutions are tasked with identifying their human resource needs. This recruitment effort is a historical record, and it follows the recruitment of 8,000 master’s and doctoral graduates from various fields in August.

“All master’s and doctoral graduates who were unemployed have been recruited. They have been in their positions since September 3rd,” the minister’s advisor announced. Before the start of classes, these new recruits, in line with the ministry’s new “language policy,” underwent English language training. With this recruitment drive, aside from addressing unemployment, the university system has taken a “qualitative step forward,” assures Mr. Daoudi.

Algeria is now transitioning from one instructor for every 26 students to one instructor for every 22 students. “In higher education institutions, we have managed to provide one instructor for every 10 students,” he added, noting that Algeria is moving closer to international standards. He explains that all graduates were recruited without exception, following the specified conditions, except for those who defended their doctoral theses after August 2023.

In other good news, the Ministry of Higher Education is finalizing the process of increasing salaries and revising the specific status of teachers across all categories. These matters are in an advanced stage of study in the relevant departments, according to Abdeljabbar Daoudi. This comes in response to President Tebboune’s instructions to improve the socio-professional conditions of this group and ensure better comfort for quality teaching, research, and innovation. Details and the implementation timeline for these decisions will be made public soon.

Starting this October, students will also see an increase in their scholarships by 700 Algerian Dinars (DA), as announced in the recent Cabinet meeting. The scholarship will now amount to 6,000 DA per quarter.

A new development, according to the minister’s advisor, is that this scholarship will be disbursed at the same time for everyone, which wasn’t the case previously. “The increase will take effect starting this October, and the disbursement will be done uniformly nationwide,” Mr. Daoudi assures. It’s worth noting that scholarship applications will be processed through the Minhati platform, with details set to be released on October 15.

Another new application, Mybus, will be introduced for students to access bus schedules and availability. A system will also be implemented to allow students to use their credit for meals, automatically deducted once their bank accounts are funded. This marks a positive step towards enhancing higher education in Algeria.
