US Government Orders Review of 200,000 Refugee Cases

The Trump administration has ordered a comprehensive review of approximately 200,000 refugee cases, according to an internal government memo obtained by DZWatch. The review targets refugees who entered the United States during the previous administration of President Joe Biden.

The memo, signed by the Director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), Joe Edlow, states that the review will encompass all refugees admitted between January 20, 2021, and February 20, 2025. The order also includes a temporary halt to the processing of permanent residency applications for refugees who arrived during the Biden administration.

President Trump, upon assuming office in January, implemented a freeze on refugee admissions from around the world as part of his broader agenda to curb both legal and illegal immigration.

The memo suggests that the Biden administration may have prioritized speed and the number of refugees admitted over thorough interviews, rigorous screening, and vetting processes. This concern is cited as the primary justification for the extensive review.

“Given these concerns, USCIS has determined that a comprehensive review and re-interview process is necessary for all refugees admitted from January 20, 2021, to February 20, 2025,” the memo states. The agency will also reassess the refugee status of individuals already residing in the U.S., potentially terminating their status if they are found not to meet the established criteria.

The memo further indicates that USCIS will review and re-interview refugees admitted outside of this timeframe when resources allow.
