More than 500 residents have been displaced following the eruption of Mount Semeru in the Lumajang region of East Java, Indonesia. The volcanic activity has also resulted in injuries to at least three individuals.
According to reports, the injured are currently receiving medical treatment at the regional general hospital in Lumajang. The eruption has caused significant damage, impacting agricultural land and infrastructure in the surrounding areas.
The National Disaster Management Authority reports that approximately 204.63 hectares of agricultural land have been affected. In addition, 21 homes, an educational facility, a healthcare center, and a power station have sustained damage.
The villages of Supiturang and Oro-oro Ombo in Pronojiwo district, and Penanggal in Candipuro district, were particularly affected by the volcanic ash and debris. Authorities have established evacuation centers to accommodate the displaced residents.
Official government data indicates that 528 people have been evacuated from these villages and are now seeking shelter in government-provided facilities. The Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources’ geological agency reported that Mount Semeru erupted last Wednesday, sending a column of ash approximately 2,000 meters above the summit.
The eruption produced a hot volcanic flow extending up to 7 kilometers from the crater, accompanied by a dense plume of gray ash drifting north and northwest. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and providing assistance to those affected by the natural disaster.
