President Ghali: Sahrawi People Await Self-Determination

Luanda, Angola – Sahrawi President Brahim Ghali reiterated the Sahrawi people’s unwavering demand for the right to self-determination and independence. His remarks came during the 7th African Union – European Union Summit held in Luanda, Angola.

President Ghali emphasized that the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) represents the last vestige of colonialism in Africa. He stated, “There remains a case of decolonization, the last of its kind in Africa, that has not yet been completed. There is still an African people, the Sahrawi people, struggling patiently and steadfastly, waiting for you and the international community in general, to finally be given the opportunity to exercise their legitimate right to self-determination and independence, like the rest of the peoples of Africa and the world.”

Ghali highlighted the timeliness of the summit, coinciding with the African Union’s theme for 2025: “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations.” He framed this as an invitation to the world, particularly Europe, to address this issue with wisdom and responsibility. A successful resolution, he argued, would strengthen relations between the two organizations and their respective populations, promoting justice, peace, and mutually beneficial cooperation.

The Sahrawi President asserted that constructive dialogue and mutual trust, based on respect for shared values and principles enshrined in the European Union’s foundation and the African Union’s Constitutive Act, are crucial for a strong Africa-Europe partnership. He called for a more active role from the EU in fostering peace, ending conflicts, and upholding international law, humanitarian law, and European law within Africa.

Furthermore, President Ghali urged the cessation of foreign interference that exploits crises, exacerbates tensions, and undermines the sacred right of peoples to self-determination and sovereignty over their natural resources. He expressed confidence that the summit would solidify commitment to the shared vision for 2030, aligning with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the European Union’s strategic priorities.
