ALGIERS – A new feature on X (formerly Twitter) is shaking up the world of online information warfare, potentially unmasking networks engaged in coordinated campaigns against Algeria. The ‘About This Profile’ feature provides users with unprecedented access to account details, including creation date, original location, username change history, and activity patterns.
This increased transparency has quickly revealed the scale of orchestrated efforts targeting Algeria, allegedly managed by organized networks operating from specific countries and regions. The data suggests that the most active sources of anti-Algerian sentiment originate from several key areas.
The primary hubs appear to be Morocco, the Zionist entity, France, and the United Arab Emirates – nations known for existing political and media tensions with Algeria. Surprisingly, significant hostile activity has also been detected from Turkey and Qatar, despite the absence of an immediately obvious political context explaining this antagonism. Furthermore, accounts bearing various nationalities (Malian, Moroccan, Gulf) have been identified, suggesting the use of VPNs or the employment of paid groups operating within a unified propaganda system.
One notable revelation involves an account masquerading as a Saudi Arabian user named ‘Bander al-Tamimi’. For years, this account allegedly engaged in abusive behavior towards Algerians. The new X feature exposed the account’s true origin as being based in Morocco. This instance is not isolated, but indicative of a broader pattern of fake accounts adopting various Arab identities to sow discord, while being managed from centralized locations.
The response has been significant. Dozens of suspicious accounts reportedly deactivated their X profiles immediately after the feature’s activation, as their true origins were exposed. This mass exodus suggests that these accounts were not merely individual opinions, but components of an organized operation.
DZWatch will continue to monitor this developing situation and provide further analysis as more information becomes available.
