Algeria has issued a strong warning regarding the increasingly complex and turbulent international landscape and its impact on the African continent. The nation is advocating for a reassessment of priorities within the Africa-Europe partnership, specifically focusing on peace and security initiatives.
Speaking at the recent Africa-Europe summit, Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf highlighted the pressing need to address several critical issues. He emphasized that the summit occurs amidst a global environment fraught with complexity and instability, the consequences of which are acutely felt across Africa. This situation, according to Minister Attaf, warrants serious concern.
A primary concern raised was the resurgence of unconstitutional changes of government in Africa. Minister Attaf stated that these instances are no longer isolated events but rather a growing trend, hindering the prospect of a return to desired constitutional order. The Minister also noted the alarming increase in terrorist activity within Africa, particularly in the Sahel region, which has become a global epicenter for such threats. He lamented the perceived international silence surrounding this issue, finding it difficult to comprehend.
Furthermore, Algeria expressed deep concern regarding the proliferation of foreign military interventions in Africa. Minister Attaf argued that these interventions have become a structural element within the African security landscape, exacerbating existing crises, prolonging conflicts, and undermining opportunities for peaceful resolution.
Finally, the Algerian Foreign Minister addressed the waning continental diplomatic role and the diminishing international attention given to African security and political priorities. He noted that these priorities are no longer receiving the necessary emphasis on the multilateral international agenda.
In light of these challenges, Algeria is urging a re-evaluation of the Africa-Europe partnership’s priorities in the realm of peace and security. Minister Attaf stressed that the primary objective should be to reverse the international apathy surrounding peace and security issues in Africa. He asserted that the challenges facing the continent are not merely local or limited in scope.
