EU-AU Summit Condemns Atrocities by RSF in Sudan

Luanda, Angola – The African Union (AU) and the European Union (EU) have jointly condemned the atrocities committed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) following their control of El Fasher in North Darfur, Sudan.

The condemnation was issued in the final statement of the 7th AU-EU Summit on Cooperation and Partnership, held in Luanda, Angola, this week. The summit addressed critical issues facing both continents, with the situation in Sudan taking center stage.

The joint statement expressed deep concern regarding the escalating violence and deteriorating humanitarian situation in Sudan. Both the AU and EU voiced their support for the political process led by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in East Africa, aimed at ending the conflict that has plagued the nation for over a year and a half.

The statement further highlighted profound উদ্বেগ over the increasing violations of international humanitarian law and the attacks targeting civilians and humanitarian workers. The AU and EU emphasized the urgent need to end the conflict and ensure unhindered access for humanitarian aid to reach all parts of the country.

The summit also addressed broader global concerns, with both organizations calling for a just and comprehensive peace in Palestine, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, and other regions experiencing conflict.

The condemnation follows reports from international organizations highlighting the dire consequences of the RSF’s actions in Darfur. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) recently reported that over 100,000 people have been displaced from El Fasher and surrounding villages since the RSF took control of the city last month. Local and international organizations have also documented alleged massacres against civilians.

In addition to the situation in Darfur, the Kordofan region has also witnessed escalating attacks by the RSF in recent days, resulting in the deaths and injuries of hundreds of civilians and the displacement of tens of thousands more. The RSF currently controls all five states of Darfur, with the exception of some northern parts of North Darfur still under the control of the Sudanese army. The army maintains control over most areas of the remaining 13 states in the south, north, east, and center of the country, including the capital, Khartoum.
