New York (United Nations) – The “A3+,” a group comprising Algeria, Somalia, Sierra Leone, and Guyana, has called upon the United Nations Security Council to hold accountable all actors undermining stability and violating the arms embargo in Libya.
In a statement released Wednesday, the A3+ emphasized the urgent need for concrete action to address the ongoing challenges facing Libya. The group expressed deep concern over the persistent breaches of the UN arms embargo, which continue to fuel conflict and instability within the country.
“The Security Council must act decisively to ensure that those who violate the arms embargo and actively work to destabilize Libya are held responsible for their actions,” the statement read. The A3+ underscored the importance of upholding international law and Security Council resolutions to promote a peaceful and sustainable resolution to the Libyan crisis.
The group further highlighted the devastating impact of the ongoing conflict on the Libyan people, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive and inclusive political process. The A3+ reiterated its support for the UN-led efforts to facilitate dialogue and reconciliation among all Libyan parties.
DZWatch understands that the A3+ also urged the Security Council to strengthen its monitoring and enforcement mechanisms to effectively prevent the flow of weapons into Libya. They stressed that a robust and credible arms embargo is essential to creating an environment conducive to peace and stability.
The A3+’s call for accountability comes at a critical juncture in Libya’s political transition, as the country continues to grapple with deep divisions and security challenges. The group’s statement reflects a growing international concern over the persistent instability in Libya and the need for a concerted effort to address the root causes of the conflict.
