Hamas Appeals to Mediators Amidst Rafah Tunnel Standoff

Rafah, November 26, 2025 – Hamas has issued a statement appealing to international mediators to intervene in what it describes as a critical situation involving its fighters trapped in tunnels beneath Rafah. The organization alleges that Israeli forces are actively pursuing and attempting to eliminate these fighters, actions which Hamas condemns as a flagrant violation of the ceasefire agreement.

According to the Hamas statement, the group has made significant efforts over the past month to resolve the issue of the trapped fighters and facilitate their return home. They claim to have engaged with various political leaders and mediators, proposing specific ideas and mechanisms to address the situation. These efforts, Hamas asserts, were undertaken in full communication with mediators and the US administration, acting as a guarantor of the ceasefire.

“The brutal crime committed by the occupation, pursuing, liquidating, and arresting our Mujahideen trapped in the tunnels of Rafah, is a clear violation of the Gaza ceasefire agreement,” the statement reads. Hamas contends that Israel has undermined all attempts at resolution, choosing instead a path of violence and aggression.

Hamas further accuses Israel of prioritizing “killing, criminality, pursuit, and arrest,” thereby thwarting the efforts of mediators who have worked extensively with international parties to alleviate the suffering of these fighters. The organization holds Israel fully responsible for the lives of its members trapped in the tunnels.

The statement concludes with a direct appeal to mediators to exert pressure on Israel, urging them to allow the fighters to return to their homes. Hamas portrays these individuals as symbols of sacrifice, heroism, and patience, representing the dignity and freedom of the Palestinian people. The situation remains tense as international actors are urged to take swift action to de-escalate the conflict and ensure the safety and well-being of those involved.
