Algerian Icon Beyouna Passes Away at 73

Algeria mourns the loss of the esteemed artist Baya Bouzar, known affectionately as Beyouna, who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 73 after a battle with illness. Her burial took place today, Wednesday.

Beyouna had been admitted to Bainem Hospital in Algiers recently due to a deterioration in her health. She was later transferred to the pulmonary department at Beni Messous Hospital following directives from the Minister of Culture and Arts, Malika Bendouda, who ensured she received the best possible urgent medical care.

The actress had been suffering from severe respiratory complications, hindering oxygen flow to her brain. These issues were compounded by the effects of cancer, which she was diagnosed with in 2016.

Beyouna’s career spanned decades and encompassed theatre, film, television, singing, and even writing. She established herself as a prominent figure in Algerian comedy, celebrated for her natural charisma and ability to bring joy to audiences across the nation.

Her role in the popular television series Nass Mlah City (2002-2005) remains a career highlight, solidifying her popularity and cementing her place in the hearts of the Algerian public. Beyouna was also instrumental in promoting Algerian culture and art both domestically and internationally, particularly in Europe.

With Beyouna’s passing, Algeria loses a dedicated artist who remained devoted to her audience until her final days. Her legacy, however, will endure in the collective memory, bringing smiles to faces whenever her work is revisited. Beyouna’s contributions to Algerian art and culture will never be forgotten.
