A recent United Nations Security Council resolution has underscored the inalienable right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination, according to a representative of the Polisario Front. The resolution effectively dismantles attempts by Morocco to promote what are described as misleading narratives regarding the Western Sahara.
Speaking ahead of the 49th conference of the European Coordination of Solidarity with the Sahrawi People (EUCOCO) in Paris, Sidi Mohammed Amar, Polisario Front representative to the UN, stated that the core of UN resolution 2797, issued on October 31, 2025, lies in its adherence to the principles of the UN Charter. Central among these principles is the right of peoples to self-determination. He emphasized that any resolution to the conflict must be in accordance with the free will of the Sahrawi people and accepted by their sole legitimate representative, the Polisario Front.
According to Amar, the resolution was subject to considerable debate due to attempts by Morocco, allegedly with the support of France, to introduce what he termed colonial approaches into the text. However, these maneuvers were reportedly countered by nations committed to international law and the spirit of the UN Charter.
Amar further asserted that Morocco has attempted to disseminate misleading information, claiming that the Arabic version of the resolution recognizes undefined parties. He clarified that the Security Council recognizes only two parties: the Polisario Front as the sole legitimate representative of the Sahrawi people, and Morocco as the occupying power. Any other interpretations are merely attempts to distort the text and its legal implications.
Amar questioned why the Security Council singled out Morocco and the Polisario Front if Morocco’s interpretations held merit. He argued that this arrangement exposes Morocco’s attempts to conceal its failure to secure international recognition of its alleged sovereignty over the Western Sahara.
He highlighted that the Security Council has not recognized Moroccan sovereignty nor endorsed Morocco’s expansionist proposal as the sole basis for a solution, leaving the door open for discussions on various approaches that respect international law. Amar concluded by emphasizing that attempts by Morocco to divert attention with false claims are futile. The resolution, he said, reaffirms the international community’s commitment to the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and exposes Morocco’s efforts to circumvent international legitimacy.
