The African Union (AU) has suspended Guinea-Bissau’s membership from all its bodies with immediate effect. The decision comes two days after the ousting of President Umaro Sissoco Embaló in a military coup.
The announcement was made Friday by the Chairperson of the AU Commission. Speaking to DZWatch, he confirmed that the AU has decided to suspend Guinea-Bissau from all activities within the Union until constitutional order is restored.
“The AU has a zero-tolerance policy for unconstitutional changes of government,” stated the Chairperson. “This suspension serves as a clear message that such actions will not be tolerated.”
The situation in Guinea-Bissau remains fluid following the military takeover. Reports indicate that the military has dissolved the government and closed the country’s borders. International condemnation of the coup has been widespread, with calls for the immediate release of President Embaló and a return to civilian rule.
The African Union’s decision to suspend Guinea-Bissau is in line with its established protocols regarding member states experiencing unconstitutional changes of government. The AU has previously taken similar action in response to coups in other African nations, underscoring its commitment to democratic principles and the rule of law.
The suspension will remain in place until the AU determines that constitutional order has been fully restored in Guinea-Bissau. The AU is expected to closely monitor the situation and engage with relevant stakeholders to facilitate a peaceful and democratic transition.
This is a developing story. DZWatch will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
