African Ministers Adopt ‘Algiers Declaration’ on Local Drug Production

Participants at the African Ministerial Conference on Local Pharmaceutical Production and Health Technologies adopted the ‘Algiers Declaration’ on Friday. This declaration establishes a common ground for bolstering the continent’s health sovereignty by unifying efforts to develop the African pharmaceutical industry and reduce reliance on imports.

The ‘Algiers Declaration’ is the culmination of two days of discussions among ministers of health and pharmaceutical industries, as well as representatives from African and international bodies. The conference, held at the Abdelatif Rahal International Conference Centre in Algiers, took place under the high patronage of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

The declaration includes practical commitments related to promoting local manufacturing, technology transfer, strengthening regulatory capacities, and facilitating partnerships between African countries in the field of medicines, vaccines, and other health technologies. These commitments aim to develop a unified vision for achieving health security for the continent.

The ‘Algiers Declaration’ marks a significant step towards increased self-sufficiency in pharmaceuticals for Africa. The focus on local production and inter-African collaboration is expected to enhance access to essential medicines and reduce vulnerability to global supply chain disruptions.

This initiative underscores the growing commitment within African nations to prioritize health security and build robust pharmaceutical industries. The implementation of the ‘Algiers Declaration’ will be closely watched as a key indicator of progress in achieving these goals. Further details on the specific commitments within the declaration are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
