Algiers, November 29, 2025 – The Algerian government is being urged to implement proactive measures to adapt to the escalating challenges posed by climate change, particularly the increasing risk of floods. This call to action was emphasized by the Minister of Environment and Quality of Life, Kawthar Krikou, during the opening of a national study day dedicated to flood prevention and climate change adaptation in Algeria.
Minister Krikou underscored the critical need for a forward-thinking approach, stating that the meeting served as “a national platform for dialogue aimed at formulating a shared vision based on planning and institutional integration.” The event, which brought together key stakeholders, including the Minister of Water Resources, Taha Derbal, and the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Algeria, Natasha Van Rijnge, highlighted Algeria’s commitment to global efforts in enhancing climate change resilience and achieving water security.
Addressing the attendees, Krikou reaffirmed Algeria’s dedication to contributing to international initiatives focused on bolstering adaptive capacities in the face of a changing climate. She also stressed the importance of establishing a robust legal framework for natural disaster protection, recognizing Algeria’s vulnerability as a nation highly susceptible to such events. The minister noted that a comprehensive legal framework is essential to mitigate the impact of natural disasters and safeguard the population.
“Taking preemptive actions is no longer a choice, but a necessity,” Minister Krikou stated, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. The national study day provided a forum for experts and policymakers to discuss strategies and initiatives aimed at strengthening Algeria’s resilience to climate change and minimizing the devastating effects of floods and other natural disasters.
The discussions focused on enhancing early warning systems, improving infrastructure, and implementing sustainable land management practices. The goal is to create a more resilient Algeria, capable of withstanding the impacts of climate change and ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens.
