United Nations, New York – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres reiterated his call for an end to the occupation of Palestinian territory, as affirmed by the International Court of Justice and the General Assembly. His remarks came on the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.
Guterres emphasized the urgent need for irreversible progress towards a two-state solution, in accordance with international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.
“The occupation remains a significant obstacle to peace,” Guterres stated. “It is imperative that we work together to create conditions conducive to meaningful negotiations and a just and lasting resolution to the conflict.”
The Secretary-General highlighted the importance of addressing the root causes of the conflict, including issues related to borders, security, settlements, and refugees. He also stressed the need for all parties to refrain from actions that undermine the prospects for peace, such as the expansion of settlements and acts of violence against civilians.
“The international community must remain steadfast in its commitment to a two-state solution, which is the only viable path to a peaceful and secure future for both Palestinians and Israelis,” Guterres added.
The United Nations has long been a strong advocate for the rights of the Palestinian people and a just resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People serves as a reminder of the ongoing need for international support and action to achieve a lasting peace.
The Secretary-General’s statement underscores the continued urgency and importance of addressing the Palestinian issue on the international stage.
