Hebron, Occupied West Bank – The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) has strongly condemned the Israeli authorities’ decision to seize the inner courtyard of the Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron, describing it as a blatant act of aggression and part of a broader effort to Judaize holy sites. The movement also denounced what it called the Israeli occupation’s “fascist lawlessness” in the West Bank.
In a statement released Saturday, Hamas asserted that the Israeli decision is part of a “systematic policy to impose complete control over the Ibrahimi Mosque,” following years of military control, restrictions on worshippers, and the transformation of the surrounding area into a settlement outpost serving ethnic cleansing projects in the heart of Hebron. The statement emphasized that the move is a direct assault on the sanctity and religious significance of the site.
“The Palestinian people will not accept these settlement policies or this new aggression,” Hamas declared, vowing to continue defending Islamic holy sites with all available means. The movement called on residents of Hebron and the West Bank to rally to the Ibrahimi Mosque and stand firm against Judaization plans.
According to the Director of the Ibrahimi Mosque, Mutaz Abu Sunaina, Israeli authorities recently delivered a decision to the mosque’s administration to confiscate the inner courtyard. The order was posted on the walls of the mosque, both inside and outside. Abu Sunaina stated that the Palestinian Ministry of Endowments, in cooperation with official institutions, has submitted a legal objection and is pursuing the matter in Israeli courts. Furthermore, a formal objection has been lodged with UNESCO, as the Ibrahimi Mosque is a designated World Heritage Site.
The Ibrahimi Mosque, revered by both Muslims and Jews, has been a flashpoint for tensions. The recent decision has further fueled concerns about the future of the holy site and the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. DZWatch will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
