Sudan’s Burhan Meets Eritrean President Amidst Renewed Fighting

Port Sudan – The Chairman of Sudan’s Sovereign Council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, received Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki in Port Sudan on Saturday, as clashes between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) intensify in several regions across the country.

According to a brief statement released by the Sovereign Council, Burhan welcomed Afwerki, who is on an official visit to Sudan. The statement did not specify the exact location of the meeting within Port Sudan or the Eritrean President’s arrival time. The duration and agenda of the visit remain undisclosed.

This meeting occurs against a backdrop of escalating conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF, particularly in the South Kordofan region. The RSF maintains control over El Fasher, a city in western Sudan, since October, with local and international organizations reporting alleged atrocities against civilians.

On the ground, the Sudanese army has reportedly deployed drones targeting RSF positions in Abu Qouda and Umm Qarafa in North Kordofan. Military sources claim the drone strikes resulted in the destruction of eight vehicles and the deaths of numerous RSF personnel. Further reports indicate that army drones also targeted RSF locations in Al-Fula and An-Nuhud in West Darfur.

The humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate. The administration of Al-Abyad Specialized Children’s Hospital in North Kordofan has warned of worsening malnutrition among displaced children in the city. They confirmed that 24 children have died from starvation this year. The hospital reports treating approximately 46,000 cases in the past 10 months, with half suffering from acute malnutrition.

Of Sudan’s 18 states, the RSF controls all five states within the Darfur region, except for certain northern parts of North Darfur, which remain under army control. The army maintains control over most areas in the remaining 13 states in the south, north, east, and central regions.
