Algeria Emerges as a Major Global Almond Producer

Algiers – Recent international data reveals Algeria has become a significant player in global almond production. The nation has recorded an impressive output of approximately 62,988 tons, positioning it as the eleventh-largest almond producer worldwide.

This ranking places Algeria within a market dominated by a select group of producers. The United States currently leads the pack, followed by Australia, Spain, and Turkey. China, Iran, Italy, Tunisia, and Afghanistan precede Algeria in the rankings.

These figures demonstrate that almonds are no longer a secondary crop within Algeria’s agricultural structure. Instead, they represent a key element upon which future agricultural and food policies can be built.

Within the Arab world, a clear cluster of North African nations leads almond production. Morocco dominates with an output exceeding 175,000 tons, followed by Tunisia with approximately 70,000 tons. Algeria secures the third position in the Arab world with its 62,988 tons. The remaining Arab countries register significantly smaller volumes, highlighting North Africa’s role as the core of almond production in the region.

The same pattern emerges at the African level. Morocco leads the continent, followed by Tunisia and then Algeria, solidifying North Africa’s position as the continent’s center of gravity for almond production. Contributions from other sub-Saharan African countries remain limited.

Comparisons with neighboring countries reveal that the difference between Algeria and Tunisia’s production remains relatively small, within a few thousand tons. This suggests that bridging the gap is a realistic possibility with improved efficiency in existing almond-growing areas. However, the disparity with Morocco is significant, with Morocco producing more than three times Algeria’s volume. This reflects a longer history of almond cultivation and a more developed market structure in Morocco.

The importance of these figures extends beyond mere rankings. The current production volume opens avenues for developing processing industries that utilize almonds, whether in food products, confectionery, or high-value-added derivatives such as oils and nutritional supplements. This positions Algeria for potential economic growth within the agricultural sector.
