Algiers – Preparations for the Algerian national team’s upcoming training camp face potential disruptions as approximately 19 players could experience delayed arrival. The camp, scheduled to commence in early December, may not see the full squad assembled until mid-December due to club commitments.
European clubs, particularly those with a significant number of African players, are reportedly reluctant to release their players before crucial league fixtures. Paris FC, for instance, has indicated its unwillingness to release players before the 14th of December, potentially impacting the availability of key Algerian players like Cherki and Kebbal, should they be called up.
This stance challenges FIFA regulations regarding player release for international duty. Other clubs, including Bayer Leverkusen, are also said to be requesting that players remain with their teams until the 13th of December, further complicating matters for Algeria’s coach, Vladimir Petković.
DZWatch understands that the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) is in a delicate position. While FIFA regulations favor the national team, the FAF is keen to maintain positive relationships with European clubs to ensure the well-being and stability of Algerian players within their respective teams. A strained relationship with their clubs could negatively impact players’ performances in the crucial second half of the season following the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN).
The list of players potentially affected by these delays includes prominent names such as Amoura, Chaibi, Bensebaini, Maze, Ait Nouri, Belgali, Durval, Zidanne, Bentaleb, Mandi, Kebbal, Cherki, Hadj Moussa, Zerrouki, Zorgane, Bennacer, Bakrar, Hadjam, and potentially Chiakha, should he receive a call-up. All these players have important club commitments extending into mid-December.
Furthermore, DZWatch can confirm that Riyad Mahrez will remain with Al Ahli, and Youcef Atal is expected to participate in the CAN tournament. These developments add another layer of complexity to Algeria’s preparations as they aim to make a strong showing in the upcoming competition.
