The Tighmert Seawater Desalination Plant, located in Bejaia province, has commenced operations at its full production capacity of 300,000 cubic meters per day, according to an announcement made by Sonatrach on Monday.
The state-owned energy company stated that this milestone follows the successful completion of all technical protocols implemented since the plant’s initial launch in June. The gradual increase in production capacity was executed with precision and in accordance with international standards, with a particular focus on ensuring the safety and efficiency of all equipment.
The Tighmert plant, situated in the municipality of Toudja, was constructed by the National Canal Company, a subsidiary of Sonatrach. It is one of five similar facilities included in the first supplementary national program initiated by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in 2022. This program aims to meet the drinking water needs of citizens and bolster the nation’s water security.
This crucial infrastructure project will significantly contribute to meeting the potable water demands of the population in Bejaia province. The plant will also supply drinking water to the neighboring provinces of Setif, Bouira, and Bordj Bou Arreridj.
Through its subsidiary, the Algerian Water Desalination Company, Sonatrach reaffirms its unwavering commitment to actively contribute to ensuring the sustainability of water resources. The company is fully dedicated to pursuing the implementation of projects that support national water security, particularly in light of prevailing regional and international climatic and environmental challenges.
This achievement underscores Sonatrach’s vital role in addressing Algeria’s water needs and promoting long-term resource management.
