Attaf: “Oran Process” Strengthens African Unity

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, has affirmed that the twelfth edition of the “Oran Process” served as a pivotal platform to highlight the security and political challenges confronting the African continent. It also renewed the collective responsibility to address the escalating threats.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the “Oran Process” held at the International Conference Center, Minister Attaf emphasized that this edition gained particular significance by shedding light on pressing security and political challenges. He described these challenges as “alarming and requiring a revival of collective responsibility to confront them.”

Attaf stated that the multitude of risks facing the continent are “feeding on each other.” He elaborated that the trinity of terrorism, foreign interference, and unconstitutional changes of government pose a direct threat to regional stability.

Regarding the key outcomes of the discussions, Attaf praised the conclusions reached during the sessions. These emphasized the need to reposition the African Union as a central player in crisis prevention and conflict resolution. He stressed the importance of strengthening the integrated relationship between the African Peace and Security Council and the group of African members in the UN Security Council.

The Minister further explained that this bilateral relationship requires “consistency in positions and integration in performance.” He noted that the Peace and Security Council is called upon to enhance its role, while the three African members of the Security Council are also required to keep pace with this effort in line with the aspirations of the continent.

Minister Attaf asserted that the accumulated experiences, both Algerian and African within the UN Security Council, have demonstrated the importance of strengthening the organic link between the continental organization and its UN representatives.

Attaf believes that the unity of the African group in the UN Security Council gives it weight, credibility, and strength in the face of various international pressures. He added that it enables the continent to convey its voice more effectively whenever issues of peace and security are concerned.

The Foreign Minister concluded by emphasizing that preserving African unity has been and will remain at the heart of Algeria’s priorities.
