United Nations, New York – The President of the United Nations General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, emphasized the critical need to safeguard the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination. In a statement released Tuesday, Baerbock urged member states to ensure UN resolutions are implemented effectively and not remain merely symbolic.
Baerbock’s remarks underscored the UN’s continued commitment to a just and lasting resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. She highlighted the importance of upholding international law and respecting the inherent rights of all peoples, including the right to freely determine their political status and pursue their economic, social, and cultural development.
“The right to self-determination is a fundamental principle enshrined in the UN Charter,” Baerbock stated. “It is our collective responsibility to ensure that this right is protected and upheld for the Palestinian people.”
The President’s statement comes amid ongoing discussions within the international community regarding the path towards a two-state solution. Baerbock called on all parties involved to engage in constructive dialogue and refrain from actions that could undermine the prospects for peace.
She stressed that a comprehensive and lasting peace can only be achieved through negotiations that address the core issues of the conflict, including borders, security, refugees, and Jerusalem.
The UN General Assembly has consistently reaffirmed the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, including the right to an independent state. Baerbock’s statement serves as a reminder of the international community’s enduring commitment to this principle and the urgent need to translate it into tangible progress on the ground.
The call to action emphasizes the necessity for member states to actively support initiatives aimed at achieving a just and peaceful resolution that respects the rights and aspirations of both Palestinians and Israelis.
