Report: Netanyahu Backs West Bank Settlement Expansion

DZWatch Exclusive: A recently surfaced document reveals Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s support for expanding agricultural outposts in the occupied West Bank, a move critics say aims to obstruct Palestinian development.

The document, reportedly originating from an internal government assessment, indicates Netanyahu’s backing for the continued growth of these outposts, along with efforts to retroactively legalize them under Israeli law. These outposts, often established without official authorization, are considered illegal under international law.

The revelation comes amidst ongoing discussions regarding measures to address violence perpetrated by extremist settler groups, sometimes referred to as “Hilltop Youth.” These groups are known for attacking Palestinians and seizing their land.

The document suggests that Netanyahu views these agricultural outposts as a vital tool for maintaining Israeli control over Area C of the West Bank. Area C, constituting approximately 60% of the West Bank, is under full Israeli military and administrative control.

According to the document, Netanyahu has described these settlements as a necessity to counter increasing Palestinian activity in Area C. Critics argue that this policy further restricts Palestinian construction and development while simultaneously facilitating the expansion of Israeli settlements.

Reports indicate that Netanyahu has urged government ministries to expedite the legal processes required to regulate these outposts. Human rights organizations have long documented the extensive restrictions imposed on Palestinian construction in Area C, contrasting sharply with the support and resources provided to Israeli settlements, including these newly established outposts.

DZWatch continues to investigate this developing story.
