Algeria is increasingly asserting its role as a key player on the African stage, contrasting its approach with what it perceives as disruptive maneuvering by some neighbors. Recent events hosted by Algeria, endorsed by the African Union, highlight the nation’s commitment to continental legitimacy and adherence to collectively agreed-upon decisions.
These initiatives stand in stark contrast to what Algerian officials see as a tendency towards provocation and disregard for established African protocols. Algeria emphasizes its active participation in continental forums, evidenced by its successful hosting of events officially sanctioned by the African Union. These events have witnessed unprecedented attendance and have been instrumental in shaping significant decisions at the highest levels of the African Union.
A prime example is the international conference on colonial crimes in Africa, approved through Summit Decision 903 (February 2025), an initiative spearheaded by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. Similarly, the Oran Forum on Peace and Security in Africa has evolved into a crucial continental gathering. The latest edition saw a qualitative leap in participation, attracting prominent figures like the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat. This high-level engagement underscores the forum’s growing influence in shaping continental peace and security strategies.
This recognition from the African Union’s top executive body highlights the Oran Forum’s increasing impact on decisions related to continental peace and security.
In contrast, Algeria views the diplomatic efforts of some other regional actors as being characterized by isolation and a reliance on tactics that fall outside the boundaries of agreed-upon continental mandates. This perceived divergence in approach has led to political isolation, with some actors reportedly engaging in closed-door meetings alongside governments that have come to power through unconstitutional means. Algeria remains committed to upholding the principles of legitimacy and collective action within the African Union.
