Xi Urges Macron to Champion Multipolar World Order

President Xi Jinping of China has called on his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, to support a multipolar world order. The appeal was made during talks held in Beijing on Thursday, where discussions centered on trade relations and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

According to reports, President Xi emphasized China’s willingness to collaborate with France to enhance dialogue and cooperation on global issues. He stated that both nations should actively promote a multipolar approach to international relations, moving away from what China perceives as Western and American dominance in political and economic affairs.

President Macron is expected to press China to use its influence to help broker a ceasefire in Ukraine. Prior to the meeting, French officials indicated that they were relying on China, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, to exert pressure on Russia to agree to a cessation of hostilities.

China has consistently advocated for peace talks and respect for the territorial integrity of all countries, but has refrained from condemning Russia’s actions in Ukraine. Western governments have accused Beijing of providing Russia with critical economic support for its war efforts, particularly by supplying military components for its defense industry.

During his visit, Macron, who is making his fourth official trip to China since assuming office in 2017, is also scheduled to meet with Premier Li Qiang. Trade will be a key topic of discussion, as the European Union faces a substantial trade deficit with China. An advisor to Macron stated that it is crucial for China to increase consumption and reduce exports, while it is essential for Europeans to save less and produce more.

The French President has previously urged the European Union to reduce its dependence on the United States and develop its own strategic autonomy.
