Severe Weather Prompts Rescue Operations Across Algeria

DZWatch Exclusive: Recent severe weather across several Algerian provinces has prompted significant intervention from the Civil Protection Directorate. Operations have focused on rescuing individuals trapped by floodwaters and mitigating the impact of heavy rainfall.

According to a statement released by the Directorate, interventions as of 8:00 PM yesterday included responding to significant flooding in the Algiers province. In Bir Khadem, Civil Protection units were deployed to drain accumulated rainwater obstructing the entrance to a polyclinic in the Ikhewa Djilali neighborhood.

In the Constantine province, specifically in the municipality of Gué de Constantine, teams addressed flooding at the entrance of the train station. A particularly challenging operation involved the rescue of four individuals trapped inside a vehicle submerged in a flooded underpass near the station. Elsewhere near the train station, another vehicle with three occupants was freed from rising floodwaters.

The western province of Oran also experienced significant weather-related incidents. In Tafraoui, Civil Protection units were dispatched to a factory inundated after the Oued Bouchter river overflowed its banks. Teams worked to drain the floodwaters and minimize damage.

Further inland, in the Saida province, Civil Protection units responded to flooding in Ain El Hadjar, draining rainwater that had accumulated within the municipality’s compound.

In Sidi Bel Abbès province, the municipality of Mezouaru saw Civil Protection teams deployed to drain floodwaters from the Roti Abdelkader farm. In a separate operation, twenty head of livestock were rescued from rising floodwaters on the same farm. DZWatch will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
