Hama: From Assad’s Lesson to the Gateway of His Fall

Revolutionary fervor has returned to the city of Hama after its liberation. Forces pushing back against aggression have achieved a strategic breakthrough towards Hama from two main axes. This follows the capture of Brigade 87, the Armored Vehicle School, and the headquarters of Division 25 on the eastern front, as well as the towns of Khattab, Arza, and al-Majdal on the western front. These advances were coupled with feigned operations towards Jabal Zein al-Abidin and the town of Qamhana, designed to distract the forces of the ousted Syrian President, Bashar al-Assad.

These developments on the ground are according to a fighter within the forces pushing back against aggression, part of a broader plan orchestrated by the military operations command. This command was instrumental in bringing about the downfall of the Assad regime in the city on December 8th, 2024.

Hama, a city that the Syrian regime intended to serve as a terrifying example to anyone demanding freedom, has transformed into a long-awaited victory after more than four decades. Following the unexpected defeat of Assad’s forces and their withdrawal from Aleppo in late November 2024, the regime attempted to regroup, launching counter-offensives from Hama to halt the advance of the opposition. The Syrian opposition had already seized control of the southern Idlib countryside and penetrated the administrative borders of the Hama governorate, particularly in the northern and northwestern towns, which witnessed fierce battles.

Regime forces fortified themselves in Jabal Zein al-Abidin, which overlooks the city and its northern countryside, establishing a strong defensive line. However, opposition factions utilized “al-Shaheen” drones and anti-tank guided missiles to breach these fortifications. Airstrikes carried out by regime and Russian aircraft failed to halt the opposition’s progress.

The declaration of liberation came on the evening of December 5th, as cries of jubilation resounded throughout the region.
