Algiers – Minister of Interior, Local Authorities, and Transport, Said Seyouda, presented the draft law concerning the country’s regional organization to the Senate’s Committee on Legal and Administrative Affairs, Human Rights, Local Organization, Regional Planning, and Territorial Division on Thursday. The session took place at the Council of the Nation headquarters.

The proposed legislation aims to redefine and streamline the regional organization of Algeria, a move the government hopes will lead to more efficient administration and resource allocation. The bill is expected to address various aspects of regional governance, including the distribution of powers and responsibilities between different levels of government, the creation or modification of administrative regions, and the promotion of balanced regional development.

During the presentation, Minister Seyouda emphasized the importance of the bill in achieving the government’s strategic objectives for economic diversification and social equity. He highlighted the need for a robust and adaptable regional framework that can respond effectively to the evolving needs of the country’s diverse regions. The Minister also underscored the extensive consultations that were conducted with various stakeholders, including local officials, civil society organizations, and experts, to ensure that the bill reflects the concerns and aspirations of the Algerian people.

The Senate Committee members engaged in a thorough discussion of the bill, raising questions and offering suggestions for improvement. Key areas of focus included the potential impact of the proposed changes on local communities, the mechanisms for ensuring accountability and transparency in regional governance, and the strategies for promoting sustainable development in all regions of the country.

The committee is expected to continue its deliberations on the bill in the coming weeks, with a view to submitting its recommendations to the full Senate for consideration. The passage of this legislation would represent a significant step towards modernizing Algeria’s administrative structure and promoting more effective regional governance.
