Spanish Media Warns of Moroccan Control in Western Sahara

Spanish media outlets have recently raised concerns regarding what they describe as Morocco’s attempts to consolidate its control over the disputed territory of Western Sahara and its natural resources. These reports highlight potential violations of international law and UN resolutions pertaining to the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.

Reports suggest that Morocco is allegedly attempting to impose a new reality on the ground through economic policies and strategic maneuvers. These actions are reportedly exploiting the absence of effective international mechanisms to prevent such developments. Any unilateral move aimed at solidifying control over the territories is seen as a potential breach of international law and a threat to the rights of the Sahrawi people.

One legal expert and former diplomat, José Antonio de Yturriaga, stated that Morocco seeks to legitimize its presence in Western Sahara through persistent efforts to conceal legal vulnerabilities and capitalize on the perceived lack of effective international oversight. He argued that these policies aim to entrench control over land, water, and airspace in the disputed territories, potentially violating the rights of the Sahrawi people and undermining their right to self-determination.

Furthermore, it was noted that Spain, as the administering power of Western Sahara, bears an international responsibility to monitor the situation and ensure respect for international law and the rights of the Sahrawi people. Any inaction or neglect on Spain’s part could be interpreted as tacitly contributing to the consolidation of Moroccan control over the territory.

De Yturriaga emphasized that Morocco seeks from Spain what it lacks: legitimacy. He added that Morocco’s goal is to conceal its legal weakness.

Another report highlighted Morocco’s alleged attempts to control the airspace over Western Sahara, potentially impacting Spanish navigation jurisdictions. These moves could directly affect the Canary Islands, a region particularly sensitive to changes in maritime borders or air corridors.

The recent UN Security Council resolution 2797/2025 was also mentioned. However, it was clarified that it does not alter the legal reality of the situation.
