Algiers – Algeria is playing an increasingly pivotal role within the African Union (AU), leveraging its institutional legitimacy to reshape the landscape of continental decision-making. Experts in diplomacy and African affairs observe a critical phase of political and institutional restructuring across the continent. Individual initiatives and isolated actions outside established frameworks are becoming less effective.
Influential actors are now those operating within the AU framework, adhering to binding continental decisions. This has allowed Algeria to achieve a prominent and active presence in guiding discussions and shaping continental policy.
Algeria’s commitment to institutional engagement within the AU is clearly demonstrated by recent events hosted in the country, notably the International Conference on Colonial Crimes in Africa and the high-level symposium on peace and security known as the “Oran Process.”
These events reflect a strategic orientation rooted in institutional legitimacy, positioning Algeria as a central player in major discussions related to managing historical memory and strengthening the collective security architecture within the continent.
The International Conference on Colonial Crimes in Africa was a direct response to AU Decision 903 (February 2025). It represents a tangible commitment to a comprehensive continental process aimed at redressing harm and restoring the historical memory of Africans and people of African descent. Experts believe that Algeria’s approach contributes to building an independent African perspective on colonial memory, moving away from impulsiveness or emotional rhetoric. This strengthens its position as a credible and trustworthy actor.
The “Oran Process,” established in 2013 and formalized as a permanent mechanism in 2022, serves as a crucial meeting point between members of the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC) and the African Group within the United Nations Security Council (A3). Diplomatic sources indicate that this initiative has evolved beyond a mere forum for statements. It is now a vital platform for substantive engagement and policy coordination.
