In an exclusive interview with DZWatch, former Algerian international Antar Yahia has provided a realistic assessment of the national team’s level of preparedness ahead of the World Cup. Yahia highlighted the key challenges facing ‘Les Verts’ in this major global tournament.
Yahia acknowledged that the Algerian squad boasts professional players competing in top European leagues, where they consistently deliver high-level performances. However, he cautioned that the infrequent nature of World Cup participation – held only every four years – could mean some players lack the necessary experience to cope with the pressure of international matches.
“The key is experience,” Yahia stated. “Playing at the highest level week in, week out in Europe is vital, but the World Cup is a different beast. The pressure, the scrutiny, the intensity – it’s unlike anything else.”
He expressed his hope that both the players and the technical staff would be fully prepared and capable of delivering a performance worthy of the Algerian public’s expectations. Yahia emphasized that the ultimate goal is to “bring joy to the people” and provide them with moments of pride during the world’s biggest football event.
“We need to go there with a clear strategy and a strong mentality,” Yahia added. “The players must believe in themselves and in their ability to compete against the best in the world. If they do that, I am confident they can achieve great things.”
