AU Commission Chief Urges Rwanda, DRC to Uphold Peace Accord

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahamat Ali Youssouf, has welcomed the recent peace agreement signed by Rwandan President Paul Kagame and President Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). He hailed the agreement as a significant step towards achieving lasting peace, security, and stability in the Great Lakes region.

The Chairperson, who attended the signing ceremony in Washington D.C. alongside other African Heads of State, commended the decisive leadership that made the agreement possible. In a statement released Friday, Youssouf urged all parties to implement the agreement faithfully, ensuring it becomes a foundation for reconciliation, regional cooperation, and sustainable peace.

“The African Union Commission stands ready to support the parties and regional mechanisms in advancing this vital process, to the benefit of the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, and the region as a whole,” he stated.

The agreement, signed on Thursday in Washington, stipulates an immediate cessation of hostilities, restoration of stability in the region, and guarantees the territorial integrity of the DRC. It also aims to reinforce the DRC’s sovereignty over its natural resources and initiate a long-term economic cooperation path between the two countries. The AU Commission’s support will be crucial in ensuring the successful implementation of these critical aspects. Analysts believe that sustained commitment from both Rwanda and the DRC is essential for the accord to yield tangible results.

This development is viewed as a critical opportunity to foster lasting stability in a region historically plagued by conflict and instability. The AU’s role in facilitating and monitoring the implementation of the peace agreement will be paramount in achieving its objectives and promoting regional prosperity.
