Traffic Law Overhaul Proposed to Algerian Parliament

Algiers – Minister of Interior, Local Authorities, and Transport, Said Saayoud, presented a draft law concerning significant amendments to the national traffic code before the National People’s Assembly’s (APN) Committee on Transportation, Telecommunications, and Wireless Communications earlier today. The session, held this Tuesday, saw a detailed exposition of the proposed legislation aimed at modernizing and improving road safety across Algeria.

The presentation, attended by Minister of Relations with Parliament, Nadjiba Djilali, highlighted key areas of reform within the existing traffic laws. These reforms are expected to address current challenges in traffic management, reduce road accidents, and promote safer driving practices among Algerian citizens.

Minister Saayoud emphasized the importance of adapting the legal framework to the evolving needs of the transportation sector. He outlined several key provisions within the draft law, including enhanced penalties for traffic violations, stricter regulations on vehicle inspections, and the introduction of new technologies to monitor and manage traffic flow more effectively. The proposed legislation also seeks to improve driver education and training programs, ensuring that new drivers are adequately prepared to navigate Algerian roads safely.

The APN Committee members engaged in a thorough discussion with Minister Saayoud, raising questions and offering feedback on the proposed amendments. The committee will now deliberate on the draft law before submitting its recommendations to the full assembly for a vote. This legislative effort underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing road safety and modernizing the transportation infrastructure in Algeria. The amendments are expected to have a significant impact on the daily lives of Algerian drivers and pedestrians alike.
