Hamas Leader: Palestinian Authority Should Govern Gaza

Khaled Meshaal, a prominent leader within Hamas, has stated that the future governance of Gaza must be Palestinian-led. In an exclusive interview, Meshaal emphasized that the Palestinian people should have the sole authority to decide and govern their own affairs within the territory.

Meshaal addressed concerns regarding security and potential future conflicts, suggesting that Hamas is exploring realistic approaches to prevent renewed attacks from Gaza, while simultaneously rejecting the notion of complete disarmament. He argued that the primary threat originates from Israel, not from Gaza, which is being pressured to relinquish its arms.

“Disarming the Palestinians is akin to disarming their spirit,” Meshaal stated, underscoring the sensitive nature of the disarmament issue. He revealed that Hamas has communicated to mediators the urgent need for assistance in Gaza’s recovery and rebuilding efforts.

The Hamas leader highlighted the resurgence of the Palestinian cause on the regional stage, asserting that it has moved from being a neglected issue to one that demands attention from all parties involved. He believes that Gaza has fulfilled its obligations and now deserves the opportunity to recover and rebuild, rather than being perpetually required to engage in conflict.

Meshaal’s comments come as international efforts, spearheaded by the United States, are focused on transitioning to the next phase of a ceasefire agreement. The issue of Hamas’s weaponry remains a central point of contention. While Israel insists on disarmament as a prerequisite for further progress, Hamas maintains that it will only consider relinquishing its arms within the framework of a national dialogue, with the ultimate goal of transferring weapons to a future independent Palestinian state.
