Tindouf, Algeria – Minister of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure, Abdelkader Djellouli, affirmed today in Tindouf the critical need to mobilize all available resources to expedite the completion of the Western Mining Railway project.
During his visit to the region, Minister Djellouli emphasized the strategic importance of this infrastructure initiative, which spans 950 kilometers, connecting the iron ore mines of Gara Djebilet, through Tindouf and Beni Abbes, to the processing and transportation hub of Bechar.
“The completion of this railway line is paramount to unlocking the full potential of the Gara Djebilet iron ore deposits,” Djellouli stated. “It will not only facilitate the efficient and cost-effective transport of minerals but also stimulate economic growth and create employment opportunities throughout the region.”
The minister reiterated the government’s commitment to providing the necessary support to ensure the timely completion of the project. This includes addressing logistical challenges, streamlining bureaucratic processes, and ensuring adequate funding for all phases of construction.
DZWatch understands that several key milestones have already been achieved, including significant progress in land acquisition and preliminary earthworks. However, challenges remain, particularly concerning the harsh desert environment and the need for specialized equipment and expertise.
The Western Mining Railway is a crucial component of Algeria’s strategy to diversify its economy and reduce its reliance on hydrocarbons. By developing its mineral resources, the country aims to become a major player in the global steel industry and create a more sustainable and resilient economic future.
The project is expected to have a transformative impact on the southwest region of Algeria, fostering industrial development, attracting investment, and improving the quality of life for local communities. The government is working closely with local stakeholders to ensure that the benefits of the railway are shared equitably and that any potential negative impacts are mitigated effectively.
