Algiers, December 11, 2025 – In a significant victory for Algerian cultural diplomacy, Algeria has successfully reaffirmed the caftan’s status as an integral part of its intangible cultural heritage. This achievement was secured during the 20th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, held in New Delhi, India, from December 8th to 13th, 2025.
This milestone underscores the caftan’s deep historical and cultural significance as a symbol deeply rooted in Algerian identity. Algeria emphasized that the traditional garment was initially inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2012 through two national files, which have since been updated and unanimously reaffirmed.
During the working sessions, the committee unanimously approved the amendment and confirmation of the official translation of the national file title registered in 2012, previously known as “Rituals and Craft Skills Associated with the Wedding Costume Tradition of Tlemcen – ‘Lebsa Erftan’.”
A precise translation of the title in both English and French was also adopted. This strategic move aims to enhance the international visibility of the Algerian caftan and solidify its identity within global cultural forums, reflecting Algeria’s dedication to safeguarding and promoting its intangible heritage within international organizations.
This development further demonstrates Algeria’s commitment to preserving its authentic heritage and promoting it worldwide. It also highlights the country’s ongoing efforts to support traditional crafts and educate younger generations about their cultural value.
A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the 20th session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, convened in New Delhi, explicitly recognized Algeria’s priority in registering the caftan as a fundamental element of its rich cultural heritage on Thursday, December 11, 2025. The committee also decided to amend the name of the element registered in 2024 on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity to explicitly include the term “Caftan”, thereby definitively associating the Algerian element with this iconic garment.
