Relizane, Algeria – An international network involved in the smuggling of pharmaceutical products has been dismantled in Relizane, according to sources within the National Gendarmerie.
The operation, conducted by the Research and Investigation Department of the National Gendarmerie’s regional group in Relizane, resulted in the arrest of several individuals and the seizure of a significant quantity of illegally trafficked medication.
The initial breakthrough occurred when officers from the National Gendarmerie’s Sidi Lazreg unit stopped a vehicle bearing foreign license plates during a routine patrol. A preliminary search of the vehicle revealed a substantial quantity of insulin pens concealed within luggage. The driver, along with three female passengers, were immediately detained and taken to the unit headquarters for further investigation.
A more thorough search of the vehicle and its occupants uncovered additional insulin, meticulously hidden inside fabric belts wrapped around the women’s bodies. Authorities also confiscated sums of money in both Algerian and foreign currencies, as well as the vehicle used in the smuggling operation.
In coordination with the Public Prosecutor at the Zemoura Court, the investigation led to the identification of two additional women implicated in the network. Jurisdiction was extended to a neighboring state, where the two suspects were apprehended.
A subsequent search of the suspects’ residence yielded further quantities of insulin pens and packaging materials intended for repackaging and resale. Additional funds in both local and foreign currencies were also seized.
Following the completion of all legal procedures, the arrested individuals and the confiscated items were presented before the Public Prosecutor at the Zemoura Court. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities working to uncover the full extent of the network’s operations and identify any additional accomplices.
