DZWatch Exclusive: A wave of threats targeting academics in Israel has surfaced, coinciding with a significant increase in academic boycotts against the country. These developments signal a potential shift in the nature of international engagement with Israeli institutions and individuals.
Since the aftermath of the Al-Aqsa Intifada, Israel has faced increasing cultural and academic isolation, fueled by global condemnation of its actions. However, following October 7th, the level of isolation has intensified, with a growing trend toward institutionalized boycotts of Israeli academic institutions.
The forms of academic isolation are also evolving. Beyond a simple increase in the number of boycotts – approximately 500 recorded in the latter half of 2024, a 66% increase compared to the first half – the scope is expanding. Boycotts now target entire academic institutions and international programs involving Israeli participation, rather than solely individual researchers.
Another notable trend is the boycott of academics and speakers, even those of Jewish background, at academic events both within and outside of Israel. One recent example involved Peter Beinart, a Jewish writer and journalism professor at New York University, who withdrew from speaking at Tel Aviv University following pressure from activists. This decision sparked outrage among some Israeli groups, highlighting the sensitivity surrounding such actions.
Perhaps the most alarming development is the emergence of direct threats against Israeli academics. Dozens have reportedly received warnings from an anonymous online source, urging them to cease alleged “criminal activity” or face being considered legitimate targets. The nature and credibility of these threats are currently under investigation. While the Israeli intelligence agency, Mossad, has not issued an official statement, sources suggest they are advising caution and increased security measures for those targeted.
DZWatch will continue to monitor these developments and provide updates as they become available.
