Algeria Focuses on Regulating Religious Discourse Online

Algiers – The Algerian government is intensifying its efforts to regulate religious discourse on social media platforms, viewing it as a crucial step in countering digital disorder and safeguarding national unity. This initiative was highlighted during the opening of a national forum on religious discourse in social media, held at the National Army Club.

The Minister of Religious Affairs and Endowments, Dr. Youssef Belmahdi, inaugurated the forum, themed “Words are Responsibility and Influence is a Message.” The event underscores the state’s strategic vision to structure religious presence within the digital sphere.

The two-day forum aims to equip religious content creators with the necessary tools and knowledge to navigate the complexities of online communication. Dr. Belmahdi emphasized the importance of providing ongoing training and development in contemporary religious discourse, bringing together content creators with academics and specialists from various sectors.

“This training framework seeks to develop communication skills, enhance dialogue techniques, and establish persuasive principles in open and closed digital spaces,” Dr. Belmahdi stated, ensuring a conscious and balanced discourse that considers the specificities and transformations of the modern era.

The initiative reflects Algeria’s commitment to promoting responsible national discourse and preserving national identity and religious heritage. The government aims to shield society from deviant behaviors and counter attempts to sow discord or undermine national unity.

The Minister stressed that regulating religious discourse in the digital space is no longer a temporary option but a national necessity, given the rapid media transformations and cross-border intellectual challenges. He further highlighted the evolving role of the Imam, who now operates both within the mosque and on digital platforms, requiring specialized training to keep pace with advancements in communication technologies, particularly with the advent of 5G and the widespread use of modern technologies and smartphones.

The ultimate goal is to empower Imams and religious figures to effectively utilize digital platforms while upholding the values of moderation and national unity.
