Minister Mohamed Laakab emphasizes the integral role of media independence in securing Algeria’s political sovereignty, citing the significance of unbiased news in today’s world.
DZWatch — Minister of Communication Mohamed Laakab has articulated that reclaiming sovereignty over radio and television was not merely a symbolical act of replacing the flag of colonization with that of independence. It had broader political and strategic implications. He underscored this perspective while presiding over the commemoration of the anniversary of Algeria’s regaining media sovereignty.
Laakab detailed that independence and sovereignty form an indivisible whole that does not tolerate piecemeal solutions or mediocrity. In his words, “Political independence would not have been complete without media independence.”
Highlighting the global issues with media bias and manipulation, especially concerning ongoing events in the Gaza Strip, the Minister said, “The disinformation and distortion of truths, particularly in the events taking place in Gaza, reflect the importance of this anniversary.”
He continued, “What is happening worldwide regarding the darkening and twisting of facts makes us understand the significance of that historic event when our forefathers stood here to reclaim Algerian media sovereignty.”
Laakab called on all Algerian media institutions to achieve media sovereignty by producing more news and programs aimed at unbiased and truthful representation. He urged media entities to work in sync for achieving an influential and sovereign media landscape.
On the occasion, the Minister also paid tribute to all the Algerian journalists who have lost their lives, either during the glorious Liberation War or in the years of independence that followed.
The Minister’s remarks not only serve as a remembrance but also as a directive for the future, underlining the vital role that a sovereign media plays in the political and strategic realms of Algeria. With increasing challenges on the global stage, the call for media independence is more pertinent now than ever.
